This past week I turned 24. It was my golden birthday! While I’ve never been super crazed about birthdays, 24 always seemed like a big deal and something for which I should party hard. I always thought I’d go to Vegas with my sisters for my 24th, a plan with several flaws as I’ve never been to Vegas nor have any desire (or money) to do so, plus my youngest sister isn’t even old enough to drink yet!
Instead, I celebrated the birthday in a very chill way, starting the day with another Penn Badgley sighting at my neighborhood coffee shop and dinner at Her Name is Han. Though I neither gambled nor partied, I’ve certainly been reflecting on my life thus far and this past year in particular. Gross! I know, no one wants to hear about cheeseball feelings, blah blah blah. But, these past few months have been tough for various reasons, which is why I’ve missed a newsletter or two, as I found it difficult to share snarky quips and opinions on the world of fashion when I felt like my world was ending.
I’ve found myself questioning nearly every aspect of my life lately, and have felt a bit sore in the groin after being repeatedly and emotionally kneed in the crotch. I won’t bore you with the details of my feelings of loneliness, losing out on a dream job, and dealing with the unexpected death of a beloved grandparent, but suffice it to say I’ve felt like I’m being tested. While I’m not exactly sure what I’m struggling to pass, I can admit that I’ve done my fair share of wallowing and feeling sorry for myself.
As a result of my self-pity, my outfits have definitely suffered. A few weeks ago I pretty much only wore my trusty GapKids jeans with a rotating t-shirt or sweatshirt on top, paired with a ratty pair of Nike Air Maxs that are a year or two past their prime. As I slowly recover I’ve started to introduce jewelry back into my life and have even managed to put on a skirt or two. Plus, for my birthday I pulled out my Issey Miyake Pleats Please top to really make my day special. Give me a few more weeks and I’ll be back to my colorful and collared self.
I think turning 24 marks a change in tune for old Sohm Body. I’m pulling out my summer clothes (a lot of long shorts and ‘60s rompers that I’ve been told make me look like a member of the von Trapp family) and I’m ready to sweat my butt off while strutting the streets of New York. I’ve just graduated with a master’s degree, I’ve got a new apartment to decorate, and I’m ready to try my hand at dating sans apps this summer.
Once I financially recover from paying the first month’s rent, a security deposit, and a broker’s fee on my new place, I have a few pieces I’d love to add to my wardrobe for summer. First off, I’ve been dreaming about a vintage pair of fisherman sandals for years. Vogue’s Zoe Ruffner read my mind and just published a piece about them! I’m hoping I’ll find a pair while thrifting in MN this summer, but in the meantime, the search continues. I’d also really like a utilitarian skort that’s as practical (for cartwheels) as it is cute. Of course, the coolest ones I’ve seen have been from Helmut Lang (too expensive) and Zara (too unethical). Sigh. Finally, part of my “pulling myself up by my bootstraps” era has involved going to the gym again, so I’d like to stock up on some tank tops to show off my new muscles.

I can confidently say that 23 was a year of the unexpected, in sometimes fun ways and in sometimes not fun ways. I think that’ll likely be the case for year 24 as well, though I’ve vowed to make sure that the good outweighs the bad. I’m embracing my independence post-grad school and I’m ready for a spicy summer! Stay tuned to see how things pan out.
My Cult of the Self:
Better Now by SebastiAn and Mayer Hawthorne
A successful find from my Spotify Discover Weekly playlist. I highly suggest listening to it loudly with headphones in.
This Bodysuit
As it gets warmer in NYC I’ve been wearing my Los Angeles Apparel backless bodysuit a lot (I have it in Chocolate) and I’m seriously considering buying it in another color.
For those that missed my IG story, Chloe’s AD apartment tour is absolutely gorgeous and I would move in instantly! That crown molding is sexy.
Bill Hader on Smartless
In case you didn’t know I’m a huge SNL fan and I’m in LOVE with Bill Hader, more specifically him as Stefan. His interview on the Smartless podcast is so fun and silly. God, I love that man.
I’m starting a part-time internship with V for the summer! Yay! I’m so excited to write and I did indeed watch The Devil Wears Prada in celebration.
Over and out.
i loved this!
Best one yet!!
